OpenAI CEO Announces ChatGPT to Launch Age Verification and “Adult Mode”

October 15 — OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently revealed that ChatGPT will soon implement age verification and introduce an “Adult Mode” for verified adult users.

Starting December 2025, users who complete age verification and are confirmed as adults will gain access to expanded content permissions. This includes previously restricted materials, such as the ability to generate adult-oriented text and images — “exactly what you’re thinking.”

Notably, Apple’s current AI services rely heavily on GPT technology, meaning the “Adult Mode” could significantly impact Apple users.

Many netizens questioned whether the adult version equates to a “pornographic GPT.” Altman clarified:

Altman first hinted at “Adult Mode” in late 2024. During OpenAI’s user poll for new features, “Adult Mode” topped the list alongside AGI, Agent development, and GPT-4 upgrades, signaling its priority in OpenAI’s 2025 roadmap.

According to OpenAI’s blog, their age verification system automatically detects underage users and switches to a teen-safe mode that blocks explicit content. If age cannot be confirmed, users are defaulted to the restricted mode and must submit valid ID proof to unlock adult features.

However, Lei’s Take points out potential loopholes: minors could use parents’ IDs or adult-assisted registrations — tactics already common in gaming age checks.

OpenAI isn’t the first to explore this space. Elon Musk’s Grok AI already supports “Adult Mode.” In July 2024, Grok launched 3D virtual companions for “SuperGrok” subscribers: “Ani” (an anime-style blonde) and “Bad Rudy” (a cartoon red panda).

“Ani” reacts dynamically to conversations, even dancing on command. Crucially, she includes a “bonding system” — reaching certain intimacy levels unlocks adult interactions.

The push for “Adult Mode” in Grok and ChatGPT stems from business strategy: boosting user retention and paid subscriptions. With low AI loyalty and limited professional-user monetization, leveraging primal desires offers a solution.

Emotional companionship is another retention tool. Current AI companions primarily target singles, anime enthusiasts, and socially isolated groups. ARK Invest predicts the “AI + emotional companionship” market will explode from $30M to $70B–$150B annually, growing over 200% yearly.

Lei’s Take suggests that owning AI companions could become as normal as having pets within a decade. Yet it raises concerns: will those nurtured by “perfect” AI relationships struggle with real human connections?
