OpenAI Launches “Thinking Adjustment” for GPT-5 to Balance Speed and Intelligence

OpenAI has announced on its official platform a brand-new “Thinking Adjustment” feature for Plus, Pro, and Business users. This new option allows users to choose the length of GPT-5’s reasoning process, offering a better balance between response speed and intelligence.

The update is already live on the ChatGPT web app. In the settings menu, users can select different modes to suit their needs. The Standard mode is the default, designed to deliver relatively smart responses while maintaining fast reply speed. For users seeking deeper conversations, the Extended mode allows GPT to think more thoroughly, though responses may take longer.OpenAI Launches “Thinking Adjustment” for GPT-5 to Balance Speed and Intelligence

Meanwhile, Pro users have additional flexibility: they can select a Light mode for the fastest possible responses, or a Heavy mode for the deepest reasoning power—though this comes with slower reply times. A key benefit is that once chosen, the setting persists across future conversations until manually changed, making it more convenient when starting multiple new chats.

Beyond thinking time adjustments, OpenAI is also actively developing a child-friendly version of ChatGPT for users under 18. This version will block explicit content and restrict discussions around self-harm or suicide. If a user shows such intentions, OpenAI will attempt to contact their parents and, if necessary, notify relevant authorities—aiming to provide a safer experience for younger users.

OpenAI continues to refine and upgrade its products to meet diverse user needs, offering a more flexible and personalized AI interaction experience.
